VISAS
Citizens of French nationality must present identity papers when entering New Caledonia: an I.D. card or a passport (recommended for stopovers in foreign countries). In all cases a return ticket or onward travel documents are required.
Return ticket or onward travel documents: As a general rule, passports must be valid for three months after the visa expiry date (for foreign citizens).
Citizens of the following countries do not require a visa for a stay of up to three months in New Caledonia : Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, the Holy See (Vatican), Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland.
For stays of more than three months in the Territory, no extension of stay can be granted.
Citizens of the following countries do not require a visa for a stay of up to one month in New CaledoniaBermuda, Brunei (Banda), Canada, Chile, Cyprus, South Korea, Croatia, United States, Hungary, Japan, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Uruguay.
For stays of more than one month in the Territory, no extension of stay can be granted.
Foreign citizens with permanent resident status in France even if the document of residency bears the indication "without territorial restriction", in order to enter the Territory these persons must apply for a visa from the prefecture of their place of residence (as the law regulating the issue of permanent residence permits (cf. ruling of 1945) is not applicable in the Overseas Territories which include New Caledonia).
Citizens of other nationalities : they must apply for a short term visa from the French consulate or embassy or prefecture of their place of residence.
Citizens of the European Union they may settle freely in New Caledonia provided that they settle and work on a self-employed basis (proof must be provided). Those who wish to come and work as a salaried employee must apply for a long term visa from the French consulate or embassy or prefecture of their place of residence.
All other foreign citizens must apply for a long term visa from the French consulate or embassy or prefecture of their place of residence.
